Masterclass on creating champions at Business Day event

Two experts who have enjoyed major success in their respective fields will go head-to-head in a business and sport masterclass as part of a new annual business event.

Dr Paul Sewell OBE and Jamie Peacock MBE will complete six rounds of knowledge exchange in The Anatomy of the Winner – The Rematch, each expressing their opinions on creating winners and leaders and sharing how to reach the top of your game.

Paul has built the family-run Sewell Group into a leading Yorkshire business and a Sunday Times Top 10 Best Company to Work For, while international rugby league legend Jamie has taken up the position of Football Manager at Hull Kingston Rovers after winning every honour in the international game.

The event, hosted by boxer Tommy Coyle, will be part of The Business Day, which aims to place business networking at the heart of a day of discovery and insight, alongside speeches from major keynote speakers, at Bridlington Spa on Friday, June 9.

It is the second time Paul and Jamie have held the masterclass following its debut as part of last year’s Humber Business Week and it will form part of Sewell Group’s interactive zone offering at The Business Day as one of the main sponsors.

Paul was pipped to the post by Jamie last year when three judges decided the rugby star – by a tiny margin – scooped the top spot on a technicality following a light-hearted touch of humour and banter.

Paul said he hopes the “rematch” will offer food for thought for attendees and encourage people to nurture talent.

He said: “I really enjoyed the event with Jamie last year, comparing what it takes to create champions in business against sport. I think the result was totally unfair and I’m relishing the chance for a rematch.

“We had fantastic feedback last time and I’m delighted to be able to do that again in six rounds.

“It’s great to be working with Jamie on what is a very serious subject on learning from other spheres to improve what we do in business. If you believe the talent you have in your business is key and you want to be a home for talent, this is something worth having a look at.”

Jamie said he hopes the event will help people to think differently as they strive for the top.

He said: “To succeed in business and sport requires very similar mind sets, philosophies and values. To be the top of your game requires self-discipline, hard work and having an open mind about where the next advantage can come from.

“I hope those who attend will take some of this away with them. I can’t wait to be part of the day and I’m looking forward to locking horns with Paul again.”

There will also be a case study session on Sewell Group’s talent management regime, which is nationally recognised, showing how the company creates benefit for the community while doing business.

It will look at how we work with top sportspeople like Jamie and Tommy, as well as huge projects such as Hull City of Culture 2017, to pursue these goals.

The Business Day, which takes place on the final day of this year’s Humber Business Week, will include keynote speeches from Baroness Brady of Knightsbridge CBE, who is one of the most influential, high profile and respected female business leaders in the UK, and BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson CBE, a journalist, broadcaster, columnist and accomplished author.

Comedian, actor, quiz show host, singer, adventurer and presenter Alexander Armstrong will host the day-long event, as well as chairing a debate covering local, national and international current affairs.

Sponsors backing the event, which includes East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, University of Hull, KCOM, Welcome to Yorkshire, Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), For Entrepreneurs Only and Spencer Group, will each run their own interactive zone to compliment the rest of the day and ensure attendees take away as much business inspiration as possible.
