Competition Winners Lay First Brick
A laying of the first brick ceremony at the construction site of St Barnabas CE Primary School, in York, was held Tuesday, May 19th.
Safety poster competition winners, Elisha Lancaster (Year 6) and Isabella Watling (Year 1) were selected to take part.
Head Teacher, Karen Boardman, said:
“The poster competition provided the children with an opportunity to understand the importance of safety on a work site; in addition, to getting directly involved with the development.”
Jon Stonehouse, Director of Children’s Services Education and Skills, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with Sewell Group to ensure the construction works is utilised as a learning experiences for students. It’s great to see students enthusiastic and eager to be involved in projects concerning their school.”
Sewell is currently on site carrying out the work. The firm is creating two new classrooms with join resource space and extending the existing kitchen facilities.
Bill Leigh, Health & Safety Manager for Sewell Group, said:
“We’re using this experience as an opportunity to give students the chance to learn more about the importance of safety on site. Not only are students learning, but it exposes students to the potential career paths construction has to offer.”
