Sewell Group backs LGBT 50 as city gears up for week-long festival

One of Hull’s longest established businesses has given its backing to a major highlight in the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 calendar.

Sewell Group, a Sunday Times Top 10 Place To Work for consecutive years, has been announced as Presenting Partner for LGBT 50, which marks the 50th anniversary of the start of decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK.

LGBT 50 is as week-long festival which runs in Hull from July 22 to July 29, kicking off with the first ever UK Pride – Pride in Hull – on July 22.

Sewell is already a Major Partner in Hull UK City of Culture 2017 after becoming one of the first businesses to commit and show its support.

Paul Sewell, Managing Director of Sewell Group, said it is important to celebrate and embrace equality and diversity.

He said: “I am so proud that we have been chosen to link our brand with forward-thinking, modernity, and a tolerant and kind approach to life in our country.

“We strive to be a good place to work and live the values of fairness and equal opportunities as a work family. We give everyone an equal shot at career success and happiness irrespective of background, gender identity, sexual orientation, age or anything else.

“We hire, promote and reward people on their talent, hard work and commitment to our values and behaviours, and work tirelessly to maximise human potential so our people can be as good as they want to be.

“I’m really proud of the mix of talented individuals we have here and, throughout July, we’ll showcase and celebrate just that, particularly with LGBT 50 and Pride.”

As well as presence at various events throughout the week, Sewell staff are planning a ‘Show Your True Colours’ event to encourage teams across the business to wear their brightest rainbow shades while also making a donation to LGBT 50 and Pride in Hull.

The Construction and Facilities Management divisions of the business have also decorated two of their vans in LGBT 50-themed wrap, continuing the message of support on the road.

Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, thanked Sewell Group for its backing and said LGBT 50 will not disappoint, with so many highlights and exciting features packed into the week.

He said: “This summer, we are exploring the concept of freedom as never before during the third season of this spectacular year for the city.

“Hull’s connection to freedom is deep rooted, so to be at the forefront of national celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of homosexuality beginning to be decriminalised, is significant and apt.

“Sewell Group’s support of the event, as a major business in the city, is greatly welcomed.

“The advances that have been made in LGBT+ equality are recently won and the support of major businesses and employers can only help to cement those changes.”
