Employability hints and tips

Applying for a new role can be daunting – but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you want some tips about how to prepare for an interview, or the things we like to see in a CV to support your application, our list of hints and tips will help you feel more at ease when applying for one of our roles.

• Before you apply, look through the vacancy details and make sure that any relevant qualifications, skills and experiences you have are included in your CV, and cover letter (if applicable).

• Keep it concise; include the important information but try to limit your CV to a few pages.

• If you are planning to change career paths, relocate or have hopped, skipped and jumped over the traditional career path, tell us all about it! What are your plans? Are your skills transferrable? We would hate for your application to be overlooked because we haven’t got the full picture.

• Complete the application; take the time to properly answer any questions in the online application form, this is your first opportunity to make a positive impression!

• The Devil’s in the Detail; before you hit submit, give your application a quick look over for spelling mistakes, incorrect dates, addressing your cover letter to a different company… (ooops!)

• Check your junk folder! We will always get in touch with you, whether you have been successful or not, but sometimes our e-mails go straight to spam (we try not to take it personally…). Keep an eye on your voicemails and emails for updates on your application.

• Do your homework; we like to ask what you know about our Company and how we do business. Why do you want to work with us? What is it about the vacancy that caught your eye?

• Be yourself! At the Sewell Group, cultural fit is at the top of our recruitment agenda, so we take care to look for candidates that share our values and behaviours. To help us to see these traits, we hope you will feel comfortable enough to just be your authentic self. You’re the best at being you!

• Prepare for success. Make sure you know how to get to the interview location, make allowances for heavy traffic, be well presented and dressed appropriately for the interview (and if you’re not sure, just ask! We will be more than happy to help you to prepare and feel comfortable). Being well prepared will help you to be calm and confident.

• Interviews are a two way thing! It is just as important to make sure that we are the right fit for you! Take the opportunity to ask questions about the role and the business to give you an idea of whether we can offer you what you want and need to feel happy/fulfilled/challenged/secure etc. in your career.

• Life happens! Sometimes circumstances change, or things pop up which mean you can no longer attend an interview. We really appreciate when candidates let us know if they can’t make it to an interview, or are no longer looking for new opportunities, so do get in touch and keep us in the loop.
