Uncovering more going 'back to the floor'
Directors at Sewell Group have been getting their hands dirty going ‘back to the floor’ to gain a better insight into the day-to-day running of the Hull founded business.
Managing Director Paul Sewell went back to his construction roots putting in a shift at Morrill Street Health Centre, East Hull, where Sewell are currently developing a new facility to cater for its every increasing practice population. Paul was part of the team responsible for the original development 28 years ago. Paul said:
“I had a fantastic day; returning to the site after being part of the original construction team has been truly memorable. It is very important for top executives to be a real part of the services they deliver. By returning to the grassroots level periodically our senior team can gain real insight into front line operations rather than solely relying on corporate style reporting procedures. It enables the team to see the exact consequences of decisions made at board level.”
The purpose of ‘back to the floor day’ was for Sewell Group’s directors and senior staff to spend time on the front line to experience first hand how Sewell services and delivered, how business processes and operations could be bettered and to share best practice across the diverse business.
Patrick Sewell, Sewell on the go Managing Director, spent time behind the tills at the Sutton fuel and convenience store. This service station was the first in Sewell Group’s portfolio of twelve retail sites and has been serving the local community for 28 years.
Carl Sarel, Head of Sewell Construction Services, the division that handles up to 200 minor works and refurbishment projects per year for the Group, also took a walk down memory lane returning to Victoria Dock Primary School. Carl was the Construction Manager on site for the construction of the school 14 years ago and returned to spend the day with the Facilities Officer, pupils and staff.
The diverse business that delivers estates services and fuel and convenience retail across the region, recently announced it had regained its 3 star ‘extraordinary’ status as judged by the national workplace engagement specialist ‘Best Companies’.
Feedback received from the day has now been assessed, allowing the information received to be shared across the group to better business practices.
