Two new health centres in progress in South Yorkshire

Work has begun on two new health centres in South Yorkshire, bringing much needed primary care facilities for local communities.

Construction has started on the new £7m Bentley Primary Care Centre in Doncaster. The three-storey, 1,215 sqm facility will be located in the heart of Bentley, and is set to be completed by spring 2026.

Sewell Advisory has project managed the scheme, which has been designed by P+HS Architects and will be built by contractors G F Tomlinson.

Funding for the construction is provided by NHS England, with NHS South Yorkshire ICB providing revenue for the building once complete.

Simultaneously, work is underway on the £8m Rossington Medical Centre, near Doncaster, which is also project managed by Sewell Advisory and is being constructed by Tilbury Douglas. The part two-, part three-storey building will provide additional space to accommodate projected patient growth as part of new housing developments in Rossington.

Both new centres will combine two existing GP practices, replacing outdated, over-capacity facilities, bringing to the communities modern healthcare facilities with a widened service offer that better reflects the needs of the local population.

The schemes also align with the Ten Year Health Plan, a 10-year strategy to improve and reform the NHS over the next decade, which involves creating neighbourhood health centres, bringing care from hospital settings into the community and shifting from a model of managing sickness to prevention of ill-health.

Dayle Lynch, Operational Partnerships Director for Sewell Advisory, said: “We’ve been working on the South Yorkshire Primary Care Capital Programme for several years, and it’s fantastic to see some of the outputs of this programme starting to take shape. The new facilities will bring care, tailored to specific needs, into local neighbourhoods and will help reintegrate healthcare into the social fabric of communities.”

Scott Cardwell, Assistant Director for Economy and Development at City of Doncaster Council, said: “The team at Sewell Advisory have been instrumental in driving forward the delivery of the Rossington and Bentley GP hubs. Their tenacity and expertise on these challenging projects has really made a difference and I doubt these projects would have progressed to meet necessary deadlines without them being involved.”

Both health centres are due to be completed in spring/summer 2026, and are part of the wider South Yorkshire Primary Care Capital Programme, an ambitious partnership delivering £53m of strategic investment across the region to address health inequalities in some of the country’s most deprived communities. We’ve been managing the programme, supporting South Yorkshire ICB to secure the future of primary care in the region for years to come.
