Next phase for major accommodation build
Work is about to start on a new large-scale accommodation development on the University of Hull campus.
The new building is part of a wider investment, including the major redevelopment of the Brynmor Jones Library and the refurbishment of Middleton Hall, which aims to enhance the student experience and provide better facilities for the wider community.
Hull-founded Sewell Construction has been appointed as principal contractor on the build, which will provide high quality housing for 560 students.
Sewell are now on site, starting preliminary work such as putting up fences and hoardings before construction formally begins next month.
Trudi Vout, Director of Campus and Accommodation Services, said: “We are delighted to appoint a contractor with such an outstanding reputation for major developments around the region.
“The new accommodation will be another great asset for the University and shows our continued investment in providing the best possible experience for our students. We know how important it is for our students to be able to choose from a range of high quality accommodation and we are sure this new development will be very popular.”
The project will be managed by Martin Standley, a Hull-born project manager who recently led the development of the University-sponsored Thomas Ferens Academy for Sewell.
Mr Standley said: “It’s fantastic to be working on this flagship scheme for the University of Hull. It’s on the doorstep for our project team and we’re all very proud to be supporting the University in its ambition to provide world class accommodation, to attract the highest calibre of students to our city.”
The £30m development, located near the northern entrance of the campus on Inglemire Lane, will boast contemporary architecture along with the latest technology and infrastructure. Features also include en suite facilities to all rooms and a social/learning centre. The development is set to replace the Needler Hall residence in Cottingham.
The new accommodation, designed in partnership with GSS Architects, will primarily consist of eight-bed flats, with a small number of four-bed flats and studio apartments also available. Wheelchair accessible flats will be included on the ground floor, whilst ‘deluxe’ flats will occupy a key location at the centre of the site.
It is anticipated the new residences will be ready for students starting in 2016.
