CREATING A SCHOOL FIT FOR THE FUTURE

CLIENT: HULL CITY COUNCIL | TYPE OF WORK: CONSULTANCY & CONSTRUCTION | SECTOR: EDUCATION

Hull Trinity House Academy is one of the city’s oldest and best regarded secondary schools, originally established in 1787, and with a long and proud naval tradition. Their base in the city centre wasn’t large enough, and was therefore limiting how many pupils they could take on.

Our teams from Sewell Advisory and Sewell Construction worked with the Council to create a structured approach ensuring that the new Hull Trinity House School was delivered on time ready for the new school year, and within the agreed budget.

Sewell Advisory developed and project managed the scheme from the feasibility study right through on-site delivery and handover with Sewell Construction taking on the renovation work.

Keeping the work on track

Development and delivery

During the 24 month development and delivery phase, we worked as an embedded part of the Esteem team to keep the project on track and quickly resolve any issues. Work included:

– Feasibility study to find out if the project was realistic
– Regular project team meetings, site inspections and contractor progress meetings
– Engagement meetings with end users
– Streamlining the contract management process
– Coordinating community-focused activities

"It was a pleasure to work with Sewell as a valued construction partner on our project. They were very professional, proactive and had an excellent eye for detail and we were impressed that they handed the building over to us ahead of programme."

Mark Willett, Director of Facilities, Delta Academies Trust

Bringing the school up to date

Design and build

The project was delivered using a ‘design and build’ contract, and our dedicated pre-construction team worked alongside the project stakeholders to develop a detailed scope of works that met the needs of the end users whilst also keeping within the allocated budget.

All rooms needed refurbishing, with new ceilings, flooring, decoration and doors. New furniture was fitted into specialist rooms – for example, lab benching and equipment for science and technology rooms, desks for ICT suites, a large media screen for the hall and bespoke kitchen equipment.

“Consultants from the team have been embedded into Esteem throughout, providing welcome continuity during this complex project, and ensuring the school was successfully completed on time, with all stakeholder needs met, or even exceeded."

Gavin Barley, General Manager, Hull Esteem
