Building a strong, working partnership over many years and many projects

We’re well known for our expertise in educational projects, long-term partnerships with clients, working in live environments and running multiple projects at once, and nowhere shows this better than our collaborative relationship with the University of Leeds.

Our construction companies, I&G and Sewell Construction, have been working with the University of Leeds across many years, with new build, extensions and refurbishment work including revamping a state-of-the-art sports space, refurbishing and modernising a library space, remodelling an IT suite, replacing infrastructure at student accommodation, and creating a new laser laboratory – the work really showcases how versatile our teams are.

Reimagining a student library

Health Sciences Library

To support the university’s aim to create a more inclusive and enjoyable environment, our team at I&G refurbished the Health Sciences Library. Before the high-quality refurb, the space was dark, with no natural light. Though the logistics were complex within the live environment, our team helped bring the university’s vision to life to make it a stunning space where students and staff would enjoy spending their time.

"The refurbishment was located at a challenging location; level 7 of the Worsley building, located at the city centre campus and adjacent to Leeds General Infirmary. The site team had great appreciation and caused minimal disruption, even during the fantastic new roof light install"

Richard Gaughan, Associate Director at Gardiner & Theobald, appointed by University of Leeds as Project Manager and Contract Administrator

Supporting goals across the campus

Multiple projects completed

Throughout 2023, our team at Sewell Construction completed several different projects with the University, including revamping a state-of-the-art sports space, remodelling an IT suite, refurbishing part of the social sciences building and replacing infrastructure at student accommodation, showcasing our team’s versatility.

Creating modern learning spaces

Baines Wing healthcare space

The university wanted to refurbish and reconfigure 13 areas of the Baines Wing to create more modern teaching and learning areas. Due to the live environment, our team ensured disruption was kept to a minimum throughout the project, which was completed on time, within budget and without any health and safety issues.

energy efficient sports complex

Bodington Playing Fields

Our team transformed the University of Leeds Bodington Playing Fields, creating an impressive sports facility boasting three full size LED floodlit 3G Football Turf Pitches (FTPs), a four-team changing pavilion with community café, meeting space, and a car park.

The state-of-the-art new build facility was built with a reduced carbon footprint in mind, and includes photovoltaic panels, LED lighting, air source heating and a water quality management system. Materials were selected based on environmental performance to help the university on its road to decarbonisation.

“I was particularly impressed by your excellent site management and organisational skills, the way you were client focused and willing to go the extra mile, and your ability to communicate at all levels. I felt very comfortable in your ability to manage critical operations.”

Transformation with a tight timescale

Lupton Halls of Residence

The university always offer the best experience for their students, so they came to I&G to refurbish the Lupton Halls of Residence, including 18 kitchens across two blocks of flats. All the work needed to happen over the summer holidays so students weren’t disrupted during their studies, creating a challenging timescale, but our team at I&G completed the project on time, meaning the students were able to move in on the planned date in September.
