10th Award for Considerate Constructor

Sewell Group has won its 10th award in eight years at the prestigious Considerate Constructors Awards.

The scheme recognises and rewards the hard work and effort that has been made by all sites across the country.

The Silver Award won this year was for the Newland School for Girls’ delivery team, for the consideration paid to local communities, staff and the environment during the development. Only 20 awards were given out for sites in Yorkshire and just one in Hull, which belongs to Sewell.

The development, as with all Sewell sites, heavily encouraged local spending, ensuring 84% of work was completed by local subcontractors and local companies. Six young apprentices also worked on the development. On receiving the Group’s 10th award, Steve Gibson, Construction Director, said:

“The award is a huge milestone for the Group. It shows we are delivering on our promises and aim to leave more than just a building, but a legacy too. We are proud to work with the community, aiming to create the best possible facilities for the people that use them. Our commitment as ever extends to care for local people, local labour and local communities, and this recognition on a national level is testament that we’re doing the right thing.”

During the construction the site team worked heavily with the school and organised a whole host of school engagement projects. During STEM week (a national education week focussing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Sewell planned a full week of activities for pupils from all year groups, including media days on site, shadowing days in the Group’s head office and even treated 127 of year 7 students to a trade day on site, where they were able to try their hands at typical construction roles such as joinery, bricklaying and painting.

Richard King, Chairman, Hull Esteem Consortium said:

“Since joining the Esteem Board in 2012, it has been a pleasure to work alongside Sewell Group and see for myself how their unique blend of systems and passion results in excellent outcomes for their customers and the local communities in which they work.”

The Considerate Constructors National Awards recognise and reward those who have demonstrated exceptional levels of consideration against the scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice. An independent panel reviews all eligible sites and decides whether a site has reached the standard required to win a National Award and what level of Award it should receive. Commenting on this year’s awards, Considerate Constructors Scheme Chairman David Watson said:

“Many congratulations to all those who have received an award. The National Site Awards get bigger and better every year which is proof that the industry strives to improve upon its previous successes.

All award-winning sites have proven their commitment to considerate construction and continue to set ever higher standards.

On behalf of the Scheme, I would like to congratulate all award winners once again and thank you for your hard work and dedication towards improving the image of construction.”
