Aspirational programme for young people
A programme designed to increase young people’s self belief, confidence and motivation ready for the world of work has been launched today (06/05/14).
Twelve year 11 pupils from Archbishop Sentamu Academy have been specially selected to take part in a jam packed twelve week programme, coordinated by young people’s charity CatZero and sponsored by Sewell Group.
The timetable of events includes tailored development tasks for each individual, along with a ‘buddy’ business mentor from Sewell Group, who will provide advice and guidance for the pupils throughout.
The programme will also provide ‘hands on’ trade experiences at the Aspire Academy construction site, the East Hull facility which is being built by Sewell Group.
Sean Cahill, Programme Manager from CatZero said:
“Traditionally we’ve worked with hard to reach young people over the age of 18; this programme with Sewell Group is unique to anything we have done before.”
“We’ll be working with 15 and 16 year olds, in and around their classroom timetables, to get them in the right frame of mind for immediate goals, like their exams, but also looking ahead to longer term challenges, like a career path and the skills and behaviours they’ll need.”
To launch the programme the group of pupils and buddies will take part in a physical, team building day, with blind folded assault course challenges and shelter building. The activities will break the ice between pupils and their mentors, whilst encouraging important life skills such as communication, planning and team work.
Sean continued:
“During the first week we’ll be spending time with each pupil, one on one, to understand their life aspirations. We’ll plan out weekly goals to help them get nearer to that destination. It’s all about small, confidence boosting steps so they feel a regular sense of achievement.”
Laura Fermandell, Community Engagement Manager and business buddy from Sewell Group said:
“I’m expecting the programme will encourage staff, as well as the pupils, to step outside of our usual comfort zone, we’re all really looking forward to getting stuck in.”
Chris Mulqueen, the new Principal of Aspire Academy said:
“It’s programmes such as these that make pupils aware of real career opportunities in front of them. It’s an engaging way to test their abilities and develop their self confidence.”
Paul Sewell, Managing Director of Sewell Group said:
“CatZero’s consistent success has been a result of its innovative, personal approach to working with young people and engaging them through personal challenges.”
“We have worked with CatZero since it’s inception and this programme builds upon what we have learned about engaging young people with the world of work.”
